I have a bunch of projects in the pipeline that would benefit from a CNC router. One of the projects is a strip-built kayak. I want to be able to precisely cut out the forms that the kayak is built on. There are other projects, but this is the one that got me going.
There are a ton of plans and kits for building a CNC router. I bought the kit for the LEAD CNC machine from OpenBuilds. It was great fun to assemble, at least the 95% of it that I finished.
I hit a bit of a wall when it came time to attach the machine to some sort of base. I have a small basement and having a 4 foot square machine in the middle of it wasn't going to work very well. I decided to build some sort of rolling base with a flip-up table top that the machine would be attached to. Then began the overthinking of how I crease such a base while keeping it rigid so the CNC router wasn't whipping itself all over the place. That's where I left the project.
To finish the construction of the LEAD CNC machine and a rolling base for it to be mounted to. Once that's done, I need to use the CNC router to cut something non-trivial.
